English BA

The Bachelor of Arts in English prepares students for a wide variety of career opportunities, including writing, business, editing, library science, journalism, travel, civil service, human resources and administration. In addition, the major is an excellent preparation for graduate level studies in English, law, business, and related areas.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon graduation with a B.A. degree in English, USF students will:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of literary terms and/or conventions
  • Demonstrate an in-depth interpretive engagement with a specific literary topic, time-period, and/or genre
  • Demonstrate aesthetic awareness in producing creative writing
  • Demonstrate rhetorical competence in composing, understanding, and analyzing texts
  • Develop a thesis and analysis situated within a researched critical context

Degree Requirements

The B.A. in English degree requires 120 credit hours:

  • 47-49 credit hours of general education courses,
  • 30 credit hours in the English core,
  • 9 credit hours of select 300-level English courses,
  • 6¬†credit hours of select 400-level English courses,
  • 9 credit hours of any English electives, and
  • elective courses as needed

The English minor requires 18 credit hours of any English courses at the 200 level or above.

Program of Study

The B.A. in English program requires:

  • Major core, 30 credit hours: ENGL 111; ENGL 112; ENGL 113; ENGL153; ENGL 200, 207, 208, 209, or 255; ENGL 204; ENGL 231 or 232; ENGL 243; ENGL 251 or 252; ENGL 321, ENGL 401, ENGL 452
  • 300 level electives, 9 hours: three courses from ENGL 300, ENGL 302, ENGL 320, ENGL 330, ENGL 370, ENGL 342
  • 400 level electives, 6 hours: two courses from ENGL 405, ENGL 456, ENGL 463
  • Other English electives, 9 hours: any 9 hours not previously taken

The English minor requires 18 credit hours of any English courses at the 200 level or above.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet University of Saint Francis admission requirements.

Progression Requirements

English majors must maintain a GPA of at least 2.0.

Graduation Requirements

English majors must meet USF graduation requirements.
