NURS 253 - Medical Surgical Adult Health & Illness II This course focuses on the principles of
Medical-Surgical Adult Health & Illness I and
continues to develop a focus on advanced concepts
common to the acute medical-surgical client. Once
completed, the student should possess the
medical-surgical Adult Health & Illness
competencies expected of a novice practical nurse.
Knowledge focuses on caring for the acute
medical-surgical client. Concepts presented
include intravenous therapy, disaster situations,
acid-base imbalances, caring for clients in shock,
caring for clients with burns, and clients who
require emergency care. Systems include diseases
of the cardiovascular system, the neurological
system, the endocrine system, and the
musculoskeletal system. Measures to determine a
diagnosis, treat, and provide nursing care and
management are presented. The foundations of
nursing process will be implemented by students
creating and updating care plans for client care,
completing client care activities during
individualized clinical experiences, and
participating in pre & post conferences.
