SPED 137 - Foundations in Exceptionalities Introduces principles and theories, relevant laws and policies, diverse and historical points of view, human diversity issues and their impact on students and families. Studies major learning and behavior theories complemented with an analysis of effective use of tools for differentiating instruction, assessment and behavior interventions as they apply to students with exceptional needs. Explores unique challenges posed by laws and ethics as they apply to P-12 special education, including the screening, pre-referral, referral and classification procedures: as well as principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Assistive Technology to populations with exceptional needs. Includes analysis of Individual Education Programs (IEP) and other required instruments (ITP, FBA, BIP, IFP).
