Central Service Technician

The Central Service Technician is a 16-week noncredit coursework, consisting of taking SURG 105 and SURG 110. The courses are designed to prepare students to perform as a Central Service Technician in a hospital setting.  The course content includes Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) certification review along with clinical practice. Students will spend time in the clinical setting gaining knowledge and hands on experience in the areas of Decontamination, Preparing and Packaging of Instruments, Sterilization and Disinfection, Storage and Distribution, Quality Assurance Processes and Equipment.  Successful completion of the clinical course (SURG 110) will allow students to be eligible to sit for the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certification Exam.  

Certification

Upon completion of the Central Service Technician students are eligible to sit for the PROVISIONSAL Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Examination offered by the HSPA. To apply for full certification student must complete 400 hands on experience with six months of passing the certification exam. This credential validates essential skills and knowledge necessary for practice as a Central Service Technician. Certification is recognized nationally and is required by some states and/or employers in order to practice as a Central Service Technician. .In the State of Indiana, certification is not required to practice as a Central Service Technician but is preferred.

  1. Identify industry regulations and best practice standards for storage and distribution of inventory.  
  1. Recognize quality assurance practices and workplace safety procedures.  
  1. Assume responsibility for self-direction by participating in activities that contribute to personal and professional growth.
