Students majoring in this rigorous degree benefit from an education rooted in organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry. The degree skillfully weaves classroom and laboratory to create a strong foundation in physical science. Students are encouraged to discuss career goals with their faculty academic advisor to identify interests and focus their curriculum.
Students completing the B.S. in Chemistry are well prepared for advanced degrees in chemistry or medicine, or to pursue careers in research, industry, government or education.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon graduation with a B.S. degree in Chemistry, USF students will:
- Demonstrate proficiency in the theory and application of the core discipline principles of inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry.
- Apply a knowledge of experimental technique to design, carry out, record and analyze the results of hypothesis-driven research using modern instrumentation.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the social responsibility and ethical dimensions of problems and issues facing scientists today.
- Communicate the results of scientific research to chemists and non-chemists.
- Demonstrate proper procedures and knowledge of regulations for safe handling and use of hazardous chemicals
The B.S. in Chemistry degree requires 128 credit hours:
- 36-37 credit hours of Franciscan Core general education courses
- 45-48 credit hours of prescribed courses in chemistry, biology, math and physics
- a minimum of 11 credit hours of directed electives in chemistry
- elective courses as needed

Applicants must meet University of Saint Francis admission requirements. To be successful in this rigorous program, it is suggested students rank in the upper half of their high school graduation class, have a GPA of at least 2.3 on a 4.0 scale and earn a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) re-centered score of 1,000 or above (Verbal/Critical Reading and Math combined) or an American College Test (ACT) composite score of 21 or above.
Chemistry majors must maintain a GPA of at least 2.0, and are required to earn a grade of “C” or better in all science courses required by the major, including directed electives. These science courses may be repeated only once.
Prior to graduation, Chemistry majors are required to:
- complete a nationalized exam by the end of their senior year,
- complete an internship, participate in research or complete a significant project,
- present publicly the results of their research, and
- participate in a weekly science seminar each semester of enrollment.
