The pre-medical education offered prepares students for the difficult Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and the rigors of medical school. Dedicated faculty academic advisors not only work closely with students in their tenure at USF, but also assist students in medical college admissions procedures.

Students completing the B.S. in Chemistry Pre-Medicine are positioned to go on to medical school. Graduates from USF have enrolled at some of the best medical schools in the nation. Students may choose to pursue other professional programs in the medical field.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon graduation with a B.S. degree in Chemistry Pre-Medicine, USF students will:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the theory and application of the core discipline principles of inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry.
  • Apply a knowledge of experimental technique to design, carry out, record and analyze the results of hypothesis-driven research using modern instrumentation.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the social responsibility and ethical dimensions of problems and issues facing scientists today.
  • Communicate the results of scientific research to chemists and non-chemists.
  • Demonstrate proper procedures and knowledge of regulations for safe handling and use of hazardous chemicals.

Degree Requirements

The B.S. in Chemistry degree requires 128 credit hours:

  • 36-37 credit hours of Franciscan Core general education courses
  • 76 credit hours of prescribed courses in chemistry, biology, math, physics, and sociology
  • a minimum of 8 credit hours of directed electives in chemistry or biology, and
  • elective courses as needed

Program of Study

The B.S. in Chemistry Pre-Medicine requires:

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet University of Saint Francis admission requirements. To be successful in thisrigorous program, it is suggested students rank in the upper half of their high school graduation class, have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and earn a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) re-centered score of 1,000 or above (Verbal/Critical Reading and Math combined) or an American College Test (ACT) composite score of 21 or above.

Progression Requirements

Chemistry Pre-Medical majors must maintain a GPA of at least 2.0, and are required to earn a grade of “C” or better in all science courses required by the major, including directed electives. These science courses may be repeated only once.

Graduation Requirements

Prior to graduation, Chemistry Pre-Medical majors are required to:
