This course explores how teachers apply knowledge of learning theory so instructional planning and practices cultivate a classroom culture that maximizes students’ active, productive, engagement; and includes study of maximizing the effectiveness of students’ BIP’s, IEP’s and 504 Plans. As part of a professional learning community, class members will explore how students’ learning needs in secondary schools can best prepare students for 21st century life. Class members will analyze the different learning environments and management techniques required during students’ transitions from childhood, early and late teen years, and into young adulthood. Teaching practices based on learning theories such as brain-based learning concepts are particularly responsive to students’ needs. Brain-based learning concepts include: information processing, memory and retention, and the transfer of learning into observable, measureable, and authentic actions. Class members learn how to develop effective practices to create and manage positive, inclusive, classroom environments that engage all students and promote academic rigor; development of environments that meet needs of students from diverse backgrounds, while simultaneously fostering respect and responsibility.
