READ 611 - Literacy in the Content Areas Study of the foundations, research, and methods for reading, writing, and vocabulary acquisition and use. The course examines literacy development and learning readiness in pre-adolescent and adolescent students from diverse backgrounds. The course incorporates student academic standards, explores the meaning of literacy in various content disciplines and develops skills for how to create and evaluate a range of literacy experiences. Major emphasis is placed on five areas of research “based reading instruction: phonics, phonetic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and interventions that are direct, explicit and multi-sensory.
