Public Health Minor

Courses in the Public Health Minor will focus on various areas of healthcare, methods of interprofessional collaboration, and the complexity of health sciences in a diverse society.

The Public Health Minor requires 15 credits.

 

Reuired Courses (12 hours):

PBHL 105 - Introduction to Public Health


This course provides an introduction to the field of public health, with a focus on the United States, although some global health issues will also be considered.  The course will provide students with an understanding of the public health definition and key terms, history of public health, a public health approach, core functions and essential services of public health, stakeholder roles in public health, and how to determine and influence the public’s health.

PBHL 285 - US Healthcare Delivery & Public Policy


This course introduces students to the socio-ecological perspective of health and positions students to view health in relation to social and behavioral factors and social justice. Students will be introduced to basic terms, concepts and measurements related to population health and health disparities.

PBHL 325 - Epidemiology Principles


This course will introduce students to basic epidemiologic concepts including determinants of health and patterns of disease in populations, population health descriptive techniques, use of health indicators and secondary data sources.  Students will gain an understanding of the role of Epidemiology in developing prevention strategies and policy.
